About the Project

USAID’s five-year, Interethnic Integration in Education Project (IIEP) builds broad public understanding of the benefits to all citizens that arise from integrating Macedonia’s education system. IIEP also creates the political, social and economic environment needed for Macedonia to achieve sustained interethnic integration in schools, in other educational institutions and eventually all of society.

Interethnic Integration in Education Project (IIEP) is comprised of four mutually-supporting and inter-related components:

  • Component 1: Community Outreach
  • Component 2: Capacity Building of School Management and Teachers
  • Component 3: Demonstration Schools
  • Component 4: Providing Incentives to Schools and Communities

Students, parents, teachers, administrators and school board members in all primary and secondary schools across Macedonia are the primary focus of project activities. Additionally, advisors of the Bureau for Development of Education and education inspectors at national and regional levels, are also central to achieving sustained change and  actively participate in capacity strengthening activities. Achieving success also demands that the USAID Project actively engage stakeholders in schools, communities and local governments in the integrated mix of project activities. Our approach to implementing the project creates an environment where all stakeholders actively participate in this initiative. They collaboratively build a clear understanding of the importance of Interethnic Integration in Education and take responsibility, accountability and ownership of the project and resulting success.

Achieving and sustaining interethnic integration in education is a complex and long-term process. Recognizing this, core stakeholders are the center of all activities, taking the responsibility for achieving project objectives and become the agents of sustained change. Our design also carefully sequences activities so that each phase builds critical capacity for subsequent phases. Central to this is improving inter-ethnic communication and bridging ethnic, cultural, social and language gaps.
