Launch and Selection of Schools in the frames of the School Incentives Component

In the frames of the USAID’s Interethnic Integration in Education Project, the component Providing Incentives to Schools and Communities successfully launched the call for applications for schools, which selected schools for implementation of activities of this component in the first (pilot) year of the implementation. The activities of this component during the lifespan of the Project will be supported with funds by the United States European Command (USEUCOM).

The call for application invited all primary and secondary schools from the four pilot municipalities (Bitola, Butel, Strumica and Tetovo), including the schools from neighboring municipalities.

In total, 155 primary and secondary schools were eligible to apply. The Project successfully received 100 applications. The selection of schools is made through Working Group consisted of representatives of  United States European Command (EUCOM), Ministry of Education and Science / Department for Capital Investments, Step by Step, and Project staff.

The selection of the schools is done according to the set criteria and the interest the schools show for involving in the other components’ activities. The excellent quality of the applications and great interest from the schools made it even harder for the members of the working group to evaluate the applications, but only ten of them could be selected in the pilot phase. The following are the top ten best ranked schools:

  1. PS Bratstvo Migjeni – Tetovo Municiaplity
  2. PS Tefejuz – Cair Municipality
  3. PS Stiv Naumov – Bitola Municipality
  4. PS Brakja Miladinovci – Demir Hisar Municipality
  5. PS Mite Bogoevski – Resen Municipality
  6. SS Nikola Karev – Strumica Muinicipality
  7. PS Marshal Tito – Strumica Municipality, village Murtino
  8. SS 8mi Septemvri – Tetovo Municipality
  9. PS Liria – Bogovinje Municipality
  10. PS Zivko Brajkovski – Butel Municipality

Once selected, School Renovation Teams are established, becoming partners in the work and whose capacities will be strengthened through tailor made trainings. The School Renovation Teams will work closely with the Project team on improving the learning environment and on improving the interethnic integration in education.

The School Renovation Teams will be actively involved in the planning, organization and implementation. The School Renovation Teams and the technical staff from the schools will be further responsible for the maintenance of the school facilities in order to provide positive learning and working environment for the students and teachers in which they will be able to learn and work together and provide an excellent example on interethnic integration in education for other schools.

Renovation of the selected schools is anticipated to take place during the summer vacation!
