A Smile is a Smile in Any Language

Sincere smiles, joyful children’s voices, students who curiously peep into the sports hall eager to join their friends. This is the picture we saw in the Primary School  “Alija Avdovikj” on May 15. The reason for that – joint sports and fun activities in which about fifty students from Turkish, Albanian, Bosnian and Macedonian ethnic backgrounds took part.

Young people showed once more that sports and entertainment know no language barriers. The students cheered for their teammates, whom they had not known before. The excitement and joy was obvious among them, but also among the teachers as well, who not only gave instructions to the children in their work, but were also happy to join the games.

Further explanation of this wonderful day would be unnecessary. Look at this video which shows why this day was so special for the students

Such games and sports activities are happening in many schools around the country. Through them, students belonging to different ethnic backgrounds, who did not know each other prior to the activities, establish contacts and sincere children’s friendships which last. This is only one of the activities which USAID’s Interethnic Integration in Education Project implements in all schools in Macedonia.
